New Zealand Road Trip

16 August 2010 No Comment

In this age when it seems as if there is already an explanation for everything, New Zealand still hangs on to a few mysteries. Majestic snow mountains, green woodlands, crystal clear lakes, sprawling vineyards, breathtaking landscapes and enchanting cities, New Zealand seems to have it all. Even more amazing is its unique culture, rich history and friendly people that create an atmosphere of a top holiday destination. Although there is much to discover, planning how to go about it can be a little daunting if you don’t have a little help. As for places to see and visit, the list is endless.

Travellers can go slow and savour the journey and immerse themselves in the local culture. Taking un-scheduled stops is encouraged to allow vacationers to tuck into local produce at the roadside stalls, take a breather at one of the many picturesque spots along your journey or spend the night at a charming bed and breakfast. Driving routes are many but if you want to get a better idea of the different regions and what they have to offer, then consider one of New Zealand’s Themed Highways Travel Plan All such routes have been road tested, taste tested and given the thumbs up by travellers and the tourism authorities. All driving routes have signs posted up clearly and visibly so it’s very easy for visitors to find their way around.

The Twin Coast Discovery Highway begins in Auckland and travels north, tracing both coasts to Cape Reinga and back. Another popular touring route is the Thermal Explorer Highway which guarantees plenty to see and talk about over dinner. There are many dinning options along the way. Beginning at Auckland, it takes the traveller through the Waikato region and then on to the geothermal city of Rotorua. After there’s the option of detouring to Tongariro National Park then head over the hills to the wine country of Napier and Hastings. The Pacific Coast Highway takes the adventurer through a 420km of spectacular coastal scenery and beaches, forest wilderness, seaside wilderness and grape growing districts. While only 150kn long the Forgotten World Highway is a highly memorable driving journey. Built on colonial bridle paths formed in the late 19th century, the highway is remote and mysterious. Surf Highway 45 is a must if you enjoy the waves and the ocean swells. It would be hard to get lost here as road simple follows the coast. At one point is the Egmont National Park with tracks that will lure you to climb Mount Taranaki.

The Alpine Pacific Triangle Highway will take you to the wine and food experiences of Waipara, the spa delights of Hanmer Springs and the marine mammal encounters of Kaikoura. Inland Scenic Route 72 journeys from Rangiora to the farming centre of Oxford, the route continues along the foot of the alps to Mount Hutt and then Mount Somers. The Southern Scenic Route is the road to big skies, dramatic scenery and meaningful encounters with native animals. Starting at Dunedinm the route follows Southlands’ wild coasts down over to Invercargill, continues to Manapouri and then  Te Anau.  Accomodation options in New Zealand
