Perth Winter Wonderland

3 August 2010 One Comment

At the end of last year, our close friends invited my wife and I to spend some time with their family in Perth. We weren’t planning to go as we had been there before but we managed to find some cheap flights on AirAsia, so on June 29, my wife and I packed our bags and headed to Perth for a three and a half week vacation. I love the cold weather, so winter was the perfect time for me to go (and have a break from the hot, humid weather here). This was apparently one of WA’s coldest winters.

So on June 30th, we landed on Perth soil at 5.30am and walked out into a weather measuring about 3 degrees Celsius. I must say that the blast of cold air which greeted me as we walked out the airport doors was extremely refreshing. Our friend picked us up and we headed off to his house to have a bit of a rest before getting down to the holidaying business.

To list all the places which we went to would be too long and tedious so I’ll just highlight some of the places which are worth mentioning. One of the first places we went to was Harbour Town. This is like the place to go to if you want to get some great bargains. There is a huge range of quality fashion, homewares designers and manufactuers all selling top brands at prices permanently below regular retail prices. Stylish designer outlets, linens, dresses, décor, jewellery, perfume, bags, books … you name it, they have it. The curry laksa at the asian food outlet here isn’t too bad as well.

The second week we were there, our host couple took us to an amazing park known the the Araluen Botanic Park. As you can see from the picture, this place is absolutely splendid. It could even pass of as some parts of Europe. If you took a picture and told your friends that you went to Amsterdam or something like that, they’d just might believe you. There was this cafe in the middle of the park called Chalet Healy and we stopped for some hot chocolate, fries and some peach tea by the fireplace.

Mandurah I was told was the second largest city in Western Australia after the State Capital of Perth. So on the third week, we went there to check out the place as our friend’s parents had just moved there not too long ago. The journey took about an hour and a half by car. The cool thing was they were staying close by to the beach. After a lovely lunch of curry beef, we went for a stroll down at the beach. The sea was deep blue, the sand was soft, the breeze was blowing just right. There was this whole row of houses facing the beach and I thought to myself, isn’t it neat to own one? That was before I realized that it costs about AUD700K and above. Wow! One thing I really love about Australia is that you get to choose your own house design. Just get a plot of land, choose the design and build your house there. It’s not uncommon to walk down the street and find that every house has a different design.

Hillary’s Boat Harbour was another cool place we went to. Had lunch at this burger joint and was told that all the ingredients are 100% Australian. Against my better judgement, I downed a huge scoop of ice-cream for dessert and blew my calorie intake for the day. Ah, who cares, I’m on holiday. There was this man made beach there where you can go for a dip or a paddle (getting your feet soaked) There’s also a kiddie adventure park next door where the kids could go on slides and climb stuff, etc. It’s quite a cool place to relaxing and spending the day just chilling out if you have nothing to do. The ferry terminal is there as well and you could catch a ferry to Rottnest Island. Another very, very cool vacation spot. We didn’t go there this time cause we were there the last time and tried to swim and the water was freezing cold.

If you’ve not been to Perth before. I’d highly recommend it. With AirAsia flying there daily now, sometimes you can get really cheap flights when you book early and during the off-peak season. If you need accommodation, you can check out the link below

Was in Perth a couple of times. Really enjoyed my stay there with friends. Winter is the best time to go as the air is cold and nice. Would definitely go there again when the opportunity arises.
